The earliest version of runes appears at unspecified times and site in Northern Europe. The first report is due to Tacito, in 98 AD. He describes them as symbols intended for oracles, ritualistic and sacred invocation use only. The populations of the North brought him aware of how they were carved in wood or stone and thrown to the ground and then interpreting its meaning. They were also carved on altars, sacred buildings and Dolmen from those people so to seal the magical energy of the symbol on that artifact. Rune means "word spoken in a low voice," or "secret" or "enchantment, magic formula". Gradually this sacred alphabet spred in the Germanic culture first (it is where it started), then on Scandinavian, English, Irish and Icelandic culture. It has not conquered France because they had developed an already well codified culture, with similar styles but different glyphs and therefore this may lead people into error and confuse them with the Nordic / Germanic ones. Runes of which I am speaking are inextricably linked to that system developed by the mythological and legendary Vikings and Germans of which Odin is the leader, of which other legendary figures are well known, like the Loki god, the Valkyries, the tree of life Yggdrasil supporter of their cosmic system consisted of nine different worlds or dimensions, and the final battle between the gods who will destroy this universe: the Ragnarok. The ancient and original Futhark (or alphabet) consists of 24 + 1 runes, divided into groups of eight. Each of these three groups form a symbolic discourse in its own: the first shows what it is needed to live a peaceful, abundant and prosperous life on earth: agriculture, possession of goods (both economical and foods), like a herd of cattle. The second shows that having to do with life you’ll always have to deal with the unexpected, the unknowns and uncertainties like earth climate, such as snow, hail, rain or sun, which can promote or undermine the balance and well-being achieved with the first octet. The third octet leads to resolution of this dilemma presented by the first two: with qualities of calm, serenity, ability to manage wisely their village and themselves, and many magical and spiritual knowledge you can solve problems presented by the uncertainties of life, and re-create a higher balance and well-being, not exclusively phisical.

The method

There are four typical reading of the runes. With the “rune of Odin” you’ll extract a single rune indicating a general response to the question of the consultant or an indication for the day. The “Nornes” three runes spread are able to analyze the situation more accurately to the consultant, showing the fate of that situation and how it is developing along the thread of time: you’ll pull a rune for the past, one for the present situation and tips on how to manage or difficulties that you are presenting at this time, a third and final one for how the future will look like, as long as you’ll continue on the same route taken today. The “Spirit reading” can see where you are in your spiritual evolution. You’ll extract a rune for each natural element: the fire for our world linked to the actions, the water as we interpret our emotions and our feelings, the earth to understand how we behave in concrete situations, the air to understand the state of our thoughts. A final rune is drawn to understand the general character of the person: it’s the soul rune. The last reading of the runes, and the most complex, comprehensive and typical of this technique of divination, is “the Oracle”. Nine runes are thrown at random on a piece of leather divided into six quadrants: you, the circumstances around you, the practical realization, emotions, mind, intuition. In this way you can get a complete reading of the situation.
